My current CV (PDF)
I have been working in sound production since
around 1995 and see it as the combination of my interests in music
performance, electronics, audio systems and physical science. By sound
system I mean professional systems in public spaces, rather than home
theatre systems and the like. Much of my work over the past few years
has included installing and operating temporary sound systems for
music, theatre, and corporate events. My skills cover system operating
(mixing etc.) and also technical production aspects such as radio
system and comms management. It is very rewarding to achieve smooth
clear sound reinforcement for a complex musical ensemble, but I
sometimes find the most personal satisfaction comes when a simple human
voice is able to be heard with clarity and warmth in a large hall
through careful amplification.
Hearing is sound, to take a cue from the perennial question:
"If a tree falls in a forest..." I am taken with the idea of sound as
an organic thing, that has been worked and molded by the environment it
passes through before arriving at the ear drum.
Much of my work currently includes operating audio for TV production at
Channel Ten in Melbourne. I still really enjoy getting out and working
on live sound gigs for music and theatre, especially the lower-key,
community-minded events.
Having had various involvement with church sound systems over the past
decade I occasionally assume something of a advisory role for church
and community-related groups looking at investing in sound equipment.
My article Technology in Church
has arisen from a splurge of thoughts I started to have several years
ago on helping people avoid mistakes. My mantra in system design goes
something like: Keep it as simple as possible. Make it the best quality possible.
As a sound operator, I don't own much gear personally, preferring to
hire what I need, according to the needs of the job. Hiring makes sense
usually because hire companies generally keep their equipment up to
date.
